Dear MoveOn member,
My father was Eric Garner. He was murdered by the police in New York City in 2014. His killer was never indicted for the crime. My father’s last words were, “I can’t breathe,” as a police officer choked him to death, on video.
I want you to know that my father was loved dearly—by me, by my daughter, Alyssa, who misses her Pop-Pop, and by his whole family.
My father was taken too early—by a corrupted criminal justice system. It’s a system that, honestly, has always targeted Black people but that’s grown so far out of control thanks, in large part, to the crime policies of the 1990s. Today, I’m confident that there’s only one presidential candidate who is both prepared to and serious about taking on that corrupt system.
